Lost Dog Prevention Month
July is National Lost Dog Prevention Month. It’s sad when dogs get lost and can’t find their way home. There are many reasons why this happens. We as deputies can prevent many of them if we remember some important things to do. Make sure your dog always has identification on him. He can have a collar with your phone number on it, or an ID Tag attached to his collar, or he can be micro chipped.
When your dog is in the yard, remember to Close Every Gate Every Time. That goes for all doors too! If you do not have a fence, make sure your dog is on a leash. Dogs can get frightened of loud noises like fireworks, it is best to keep him in the house during fireworks.
If your dog gets away, do not chase him. He may think it’s a game. Instead sit on the ground and pretend you are crying or hurt. He will come to see if you are OK. If he does not come back, get an adult right away. Do not run after him if you see him. Instead, call him to you with a treat or toy he likes. Make sure you do not yell at him because if he thinks you are mad, it will scare him. It must be a HAPPY place, so he wants to come back to you. Then when he comes back to you, do not be mean or mad, love him instead because he probably did not know he did anything wrong.
If you see a lost dog get an adult to help you. Never go up to a strange dog you do not know.
